This book is so full of everything I love in a novel. Lovable characters. Quirky sidekicks. Mouth-watering meals and poignant human insights. I laughed out loud as many times as my heart exploded into a million pieces. That's just a roundabout way of saying that I am best friends with Katherine Heiny. She just doesn't know it. Read this when you are in the mood for a wonderfully warm comic journey set in a small town and deeply rooted in character. It is Breathing Lessons by Anne Tyler meets Friends and Strangers by J. Courtney Sullivan.
Best paired with enchiladas from the fridge, covered in foil and baked at three-fifty until warmed through, adding the sauce at the last minute.
