Author Storytime with Ioana Hobai
When I was a little girl growing up in Bucharest, all my school notebooks were covered in doodles, which got me in trouble quite a few times.
I learned to paint in oil and watercolor with my uncle, Eugen Gasca (1908-1989), who was a well-known Romanian artist and I attended the Nicolae Tonitza Art school in Bucharest. Unfortunately, my dream of pursuing a career in animation remained just a dream, and I ended up studying architecture in college.
After working as an architect for several years both in the UK and the US, I found my happy place while taking a course in children's illustration at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, in Boston. I decided not to miss a second chance, and I switched careers to pursue my true passion. I hope that my art reflects the joy I find when I sit down at my desk and pick up a pencil or a paintbrush.
My illustrator debut, BEFORE YOU SLEEP: A BEDTIME BOOK OF GRATITUDE by Annie Cronin Romano, was published in 2018 by Page Street Kids.
My author-illustrator debut, LENA’S SLIPPERS, was published this year by the same publisher. It’s a story inspired by a childhood memory, about a little girl who loves to dance but doesn’t have the right ballet slippers for a school recital and has to come up with a creative solution.
My second book as an author-illustrator, A WHALE OF A MISTAKE will be published in March 2020, again by Page Street Kids. It’s a story about a little blue person who is carried away on an emotional journey by her whale of a mistake, gaining wisdom and a new perspective along the way.
