I haven’t been this moved by a work of nonfiction since I read When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi after my father died in 2016. The Only Plane in the Sky is a powerful, emotionally wracking oral history of how 9/11 played out, moment by moment. Listen to this when you want to perform a civic duty and be inspired by the selflessness of ordinary people, even as you are distressed and startled and heartbroken.
