With an Afterword by Dr. Douglas Katz, Boston University School of Medicine

On July 26, 2006, I was in a car accident near my parent’s house in Acton, Maine. I was spending the summer at home before my senior year of college. Instead of moving into a rented house near campus with seven of my college friends, I was moved from Acton, Maine to the ICU at Maine Medical Center. I broke 6 bones and suffered a severe diffuse axonal brain injury. In the ICU, the attending physicians gave me a ten percent chance of functional recovery.

My book is about my experience recovering from a traumatic brain injury, when I came back to college, and the time immediately following my graduation from Brandeis University. It delves into the symbiotic relationship between medicine and the patient's environment, and how both elements can work together in unexpected ways. My story demonstrates these unexpected intersections of the medical profession and the patient's environment, and shows how these intersections provided key support to my ability to recover.
