What is Independent Bookstore Day?
Independent Bookstore Day is a one-day national party that takes place at indie bookstores across the country on the last Saturday in April.  Every store is unique and independent, and every party is different.

Why are we celebrating independent bookstores?
Independent bookstores are not just stores, they’re community centers and local anchors run by passionate readers. They are entire universes of ideas that contain the possibility of real serendipity. They are lively performance spaces and quiet places where aimless perusal is a day well spent.

In a world of tweets and algorithms and pageless digital downloads, bookstores are not a dying anachronism.  They are living, breathing organisms that continue to grow and expand. In fact, there are more of them this year than there were last year. And they are at your service.

"Indepedent bookstores are vital hubs of creativity and community. They are the true modern-day town square, the beating hearts of our communities, and a place for meaningful interaction and human connection." ~ Amanda Gorman, 2024 Bookstore Day Author Ambassador

"Independent bookstores are part of the fabric of the neighborhood, staffed by booksellers who know books and their customers. And shopping locally supports our communities as well as the people who live there." ~ Celese Ng, 2023 Bookstore Day Author Ambassador

"Indie bookstores are the heart of our industry, and we must continue to support them in the same way that they support and champion books. With the immense impact that indie stores have made on my career, I couldn't be more honored to be the ambassador for this year's Independent Bookstore Day." ~ Angie Thomas, 2022 Bookstore Day Author Ambassador

"I have been to one million independent bookstores. I have met the booksellers who founded them and own them. I have fallen in love with them. Zero jerks own independent bookstores. They just don't." ~ Glennon Doyle, 2021 Bookstore Day Author Ambassador

“Consumers control the marketplace by deciding where to spend their money. If what a bookstore offers matters to you, then shop at a bookstore. If you feel that the experience of reading a book is valuable, then read the book. This is how we change the world: we grab hold of it. We change ourselves.” ~ Ann Patchett, bestselling author and co-owner of Parnassus Books
