The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11 by Garrett M. Graff

September 1, 2021 (by Tara Repucci)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)

I haven’t been this moved by a work of nonfiction since I read When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi after my father died in 2016. The Only Plane in the Sky is a powerful, emotionally wracking oral history of how 9/11 played out, moment by moment. Read this when you want to perform a civic duty and be inspired by the selflessness of ordinary people, even as you are distressed and startled and heartbroken.

Best paired with water.

Also recommended as an audiobook with a full 45 person cast.
